“I don’t live in either my past or my future. I’m interested only in the present. If you can concentrate always on the present, you’ll be a happy man. Life will be a party for you, a grand festival, because life is the moment we’re living now.” — Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist
For a long time, I lived in my past. It felt safe, familiar, and predictable. But it was also toxic, traumatic, and destructive. Deep down, I knew it wasn’t where I wanted to stay—yet I replayed old memories, clung to old hurts, and let old fears dictate how I moved through life.
Every new experience was filtered through the lens of my pain. I expected disappointment, betrayal, or loss at every turn. In doing so, I chained myself to cycles I should have broken. My present suffered. My future stalled. My past haunted me.
I told myself it was karma. I told myself my past was punishment for being good. But somewhere deep inside, I knew the truth: I was destined for better. I deserved better. And I would no longer allow my past to set the tone for my happiness.
The past exists for a reason—to teach us, to shape us, to remind us of what we’ve survived. But it is not meant to be the place where we build our home. Carrying yesterday’s pain into today only robs us of joy, clarity, and growth.
Healing, however, requires courage. It means releasing the safety net of what we’ve always known, even when it hurt us. It means choosing not to replay the same story but daring to write new chapters on fresh pages. Healing means revising your story, reclaiming your power, and creating the ending you want. It means sitting with the pain, walking into uncomfortable places, taking accountability—and then stepping into freedom.
When I finally began to leave my pain where it belonged—in the past—I felt the shift. My shoulders grew lighter. My heart opened. Opportunities that were once invisible revealed themselves, because I was no longer blinded by fear.
The present moment is where transformation lives. It’s where we choose to change, to love more deeply, and to embrace peace. The past had its season, but today is a gift. The future will unfold in its own time. All we truly have is now.
So, I encourage you: stop unpacking in yesterday’s hurt. Stop rehearsing old wounds. Let the past stay behind you. Live here. Live fully. Live free.
